Born in Charleston, Massachusetts, David L. Huntington, 1834-1899, studied medicine at Yale and the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the army as an Assistant Surgeon in 1862. Huntington was Acting Medical Director Army of the Tennessee during Sherman's march to the sea in 1864. A career medical officer, Lt. Colonel Huntington at times served as acting Surgeon General. In April 1955 the Department of HEW licensed 6 companies to distribute a newly-developed polio vaccine developed by Jonas Salk of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. The vaccine's effectiveness had been endorsed by NIH and the Surgeon General. Shortly after the vaccine was distributed, however, Cutter laboratory's allotment was found to be tainted and a cause of 72 new cases of polio.
